Proofreading, failure to cull and the eating of a cheeseburger pie

60. Thursday 9 April 2026

One day, I should perhaps take a photo of the scene I was trying to get AI to recreate, just so you can see how different it is! My instruction to AI was: A woman with pixie cut white hair and thick black glasses. She is sitting at a desk overlooking spruce trees along a valley. There is a plate next to her, upon which is a cheeseburger pie. She is working hard at her computer.

I’m pleased with myself. This read-through has become a proofreading exercise rather than editing, which is kind of good (in that it feels more done than I perhaps expected). My only issue, and it is a big one, is that I don’t foresee culling a few thousand words. I think I’ve reduced it by about 500 words so far and there’s something I need to add later.

I proofread eighteen chapters, which took me up to the end of the first of two chronologies. I might have been spurred on today because I’ll be out most of tomorrow and all day Saturday and we have a viewing on Sunday, so more cleaning on Sunday morning. I have written out ideas for my one-liner but I haven’t written one that I’m happy with. I had thought it was a bit ambitious of me to aim to write that this week. But I still have a few days. Hmm.

There is nothing else of note about today. I have another sourdough on the go, which I’ll bake tomorrow. I ate my cheeseburger pie and discovered it was indeed a circular pastry case with a thick burger slotted inside and a layer of cheese on top - not at all like the slice of gooey pie in the AI picture.
